“Quality is never an accident.
It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution.
It represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

“IʼM TOTALLY HANDS ON” says Laurie Lynett who founded her design firm, Laurie Lynett Design, in 1999. “When you work with my firm, you are working with me. I wouldnʼt have it any other way. I relish the process of design at least as much as the outcome.

“FLYING UNDER THE RADAR with very little marketing and advertising for essentially the last 15 years, Laurie Lynett Design has grown into a busy interior design and decorating firm through word of mouth. “I am honoured that both my clients and my suppliers enthusiastically recommend me to their friends, family and clients.”
While Laurie is one of the fortunate few to have found success in work that comes naturally to her, the picture wasnʼt always clear to those around her.

Her parents, who travelled extensively, living in Europe and many parts of Canada with her during her formative years worried about this “Who me?” little girl who always seemed to have her head in the clouds. “I have been intrigued by colour, form and texture for as long as I can remember.”

Laurieʼs aesthetic development was well nurtured by mother nature. From the beaches of Barcelona and the forests of Germany to the tumbleweed of the Prairie and the Rocky Mountains, Laurie had soaked in a world of texture and colour before her twelfth birthday and soon found her heartʼs home in the world of design and decorating. An honours graduate of Sheridan College who is a current member of the Sheridan College Interior Decorating Program Advisory Committee, Laurie is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the industry that has embraced her.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE AND WHO HAVE YOU BEEN INFLUENCED BY?

“I love a gracious room with tufted upholstery and fine silk or velvet drapery. Adding a few contrasting, over-scaled or opposing pieces adds interest and can bring a room into striking balance. I love a European look for myself but I donʼt impose it on my clients. For them, I want rooms that reflect their style.”
I am inspired by the work of John Saladino. He describes himself as a romantic by nature, a minimalist by training, but by choice-a classicist and I relate to that. Seeing is where it all starts. Inspiration is everywhere.

HOW GREEN ARE YOU?

“IʼM CHARTREUSE. I am able to offer clients green alternatives on many design elements including paint, fabrics and furniture. I am seeing natural fabrics like wool and linen gaining in popularity and I couldnʼt be more pleased.

“Give Fleece a Chance” as the slogan goes.”

FLOWERS?

A simple clear glass vase or silver cup filled with white roses, tulips or peonies, depending on the season, is always my favourite.

TRAVEL?

I am a ceaseless traveler, a nomad at heart. Iʼve harboured a life-long dream of visiting Egypt that was finally fulfilled in 2005 and remains one of the highlights of my life. Iʼve travelled to Prague, Greece and India since then and I love Europe for its rich culture and diversity. I have a soft spot for Paris, my heartʼs home.

FURNITURE SHOPPING CAN BE STRESSFUL AND MISTAKES COSTLY. CAN YOU OFFER ANY ADVICE REGARDING LIVING ROOM OR FAMILY ROOM PLANNING?

I find it very interesting to have more than one seating area if possible. I like to mix furniture of different styles, vintages and textures. Symmetrical arrangements are ideal in perfectly proportioned rooms; if this is not the case, remember that balance and harmony should guide you and will create a more comfortable and inviting setting. This is more important than rigid symmetry.

MUSEUM?

The Louvre in Paris, Victoria & Albert and Sir John Soaneʼs in London, The Met in New York, The Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

DO YOU HAVE ANY COLLECTIONS?

I collect APPLES.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I’m an avid reader and a huge fan of tennis. I also play.
